The lake is also very famous as a Pike fishery and especially for its stock of large Specimen/Trophy fish. Wild Atlantic Salmon are also present in the lake. Full details on fishing.

There are 10 walking routes in the Moycullen are and many of them are close to the Lodge. The length of the walks vary from 5 km to 16 km. Guests at Portarra Lodge can avail of a detailed maps of all 10 routes. For those who do not wish to walk they can use the bicycles at the lodge –free of charge. Remember for walking have comfortable walking shoes & rainwear. Rainwear would also apply cycling. On route no 8 can be found “Brigit’s Garden” – newly opened nature & heritage trails.

Tours
Portarra Lodge is ideally situated as a base for touring
1. North Connemara – Glengowla Mines, Inagh Valley, Kylemore Abbey, Connemara National Park, Killary – Ashford Castle, Cong Abbey etc.
2. South Connemara – Moycullen - Celtic Crystal, Spiddal - Craft Centre, Rosmuc - Pierce’s Cottage, Roundstone – Gurteen Beach & Dog’s Bay, Clifden - Sky Road, Ballynahinch – Ballynahinch Castle Hotel
3. Aran Islands- Travel to any of the three Aran Islands by ferry from Rossaveal Harbour (30 to 45 min. from Lodge) and witness the rugged beauty, history and breathtaking scenery of the most westerly part of Ireland. On your arrival you can choose three different modes of transport to get to the places of interest on the island – Mini –bus, horse drawn side-car and the bicycle for the more energetic. For those opting for the bicycle I recommend that you get a detailed map of the island that will give you the required information on the different sites of interest. Your place on the ferry can be pre-booked at the Lodge and to insure that you visit the entire Island it is better to take the early boat (around 10.30 am) and return on the late one (around 6.00 pm).
Cliffs of Moher, Alwee Caves & The Burren.
Most people ask to go to the Cliffs of Moher, and while it is a very worthwhile trip, I would suggest that you take the time to visit the Alwee Caves and tour around The Burren.

Golf
Portarra Lodge can offer the golfer a wonderful choice of courses ranging from the 9 hole course at Glenlo Abbey, Galway to the very beautiful Connemara Links at Clifden. The other courses to choose from – Barna Golf & Country Club, Galway Golf Club, Galway Bay Golf & Country Club & Oughterard Golf Club – are all within a half hours drive of the Lodge. They are all open to the public and the green fees are not very expensive. As the courses are not generally overcrowded I suggest not to pre-book and make your choice on arrival and thus be able to take cognisance of the prevailing weather conditions. Not having made reservations allows the golfer to revisit and have a second chance on a particular course.
Here are the contact telephone numbers for those wishing to pre book their golf :-

Horse / Pony Riding

There are three centres for horse/pony riding and trekking all within a short drive of the Lodge. All the centres provide the protective clothing that is required and they stable a large selection of animals to try and suit everyone. They are long established and give an excellent service. A new Horse Riding Eventing Course has been opened half way between Moycullen Village and Portarra Lodge. The course is circa 2 mile long and has two grades of jumps, obstacles etc. One set of jumps for the accomplished riders and the smaller jumps for those with less experience. It is an all-weather outdoor course. Horses and ponies are supplied together with the necessary gear.

Here at Portarra Lodge we breed Connemara Ponies. They are very quiet animals and the guests, especially the younger ones, enjoy feeding them apples.

Attractions: For those not interested in angling there is a huge variety of attractions to suit all tastes from GOLF, HORSE/PONY RIDING, WALKING (maps of local walking routes available at the Lodge), TOURING – ARAN-ISLANDS, CONNEMARA, BURREN, CLIFFS OF MOHER, ALWEE CAVES Galway City etc
